Spot On

Community Learning

Spot On work very closely with St Albans to provide facilities and opportunities for children aged 8 – 12 years through a wide range of arts based activities. This year Spot On have only provided one scheme for young people due to a large reduction in funding, although the group continue to work with agencies such as Young Carers, Children at Risk and Children with Disabilities.

Spot On delivered a project in August 2009, the theme was led by the ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda - Staying Safe. The project ran for four days and involved a group of 20 children. A percentage were from the local community and the rest were referred from the children in need service Sandwell.

The first two mornings were delivered by an organisation called First Response, in which they interactively ran a first aid course for young people that was certificated. The course was a success – shown by the involvement of the young people taking part; they practiced on each other and dummy models.

Community Learning

The first two afternoons were about fitness levels and exercise. There were team games arranged, and everyone was eager to get involved. We discussed the importance of exercise and healthy eating, and some of the young people made posters reflecting this.

The third day was art-based, where there were a series of activities for the children to get involved with, including making pictures with beads, making pots and picture frames, accessing the computers and discussing the importance of friends and people that you can trust. This included E- safety and ‘stranger danger’ discussions.

The fourth day was a 'reward day', in which we took the young people to Bowlplex, where they enjoyed a game of bowling - something that many of the children had never experienced before. They organised themselves into teams and looked out for the needs of others. We then went to the Pizza Hut for lunch. This encouraged good social skills and appropriate behaviours in public places.

The children were asked to fill in evaluation forms that indicated the project was a great success as the response was very positive.
