All the staff, volunteers and members in the Lunch Club are very pleased with everything that is accomplished, year on year. For the third year running the Lunch Club has maintained their high standard of hygiene and received another Gold Award. The F.H.O. remarked “It gets better with each inspection.”
Maintaining the high quality of meals for centre users and outmeals, is their highest priority. From this dedication, they have spread the word to outside organisations, and St Albans now provides them with hot meals.
On Mondays, the Lunch Club serve Sandwell Irish Community Association group with up to 15 meals and puddings every week and also cater for their buffets, coffee mornings, and any other special projects e.g. Diabetic Groups.
On Tuesdays, the Lunch Club serves the Golden Years who are based in Langley Park, who have 35 to 40 meals and puddings. Dot, who runs the group, said “It’s a relief to know that her pensioners get a hot and tasty meal once a week, that is value for money.”
It’s a very important part of the Lunch Club’s service to supply a choice of meals and puddings, Mon – Fri, and frozen meals, Sat – Sun and holidays, for clients who are housebound - not just for them to see a friendly face, but for St Albans to monitor their well-being, and report any concerns. Staff and volunteers are very proud of the fact that they supplied this service through the snow in January and February. It is the effort of a devoted and committed team of staff and volunteers at St Albans which makes these situations possible.
It is this side of the service that contributes to relieving the stress on our customers’ families, who may not have the time, due to increasingly busy lifestyles, to regularly check on their elderly relatives. They have commented on how glad they are to have such a service, knowing that someone will be there to monitor their lifestyles, ensuring they are well, and eating properly.

In the Lunch Club, in partnership with The Friendship Club, staff and volunteers are working together with Julie, the Activities Co-ordinator, to arrange six themed events a year, each to include food and entertainment. So far St George’s Day and St Patrick’s Day events have been held and were great successes. Also, the Christmas Party was held on 16th December 2010, when more than 90 people attended and enjoyed a four-course meal with wine. It was a fantastic day.
