The Friendship Club

The Friendship Club has gone from strength to strength, working very closely with St Albans to provide a wide range of activities for older members of the community. Regular weekly activities include:

Monday

BUDS Club. This is an ever increasing group of people with slight dementia – a chance to meet, play games and have a sing-along, amongst other activities. BUDS is also anticipated to extend and be held on Friday mornings, facilitated by Julie, Activities Co-ordinator.

Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays

St Albans, Lunch Club

We have recently extended our twice weekly bingo sessions to three times a week, due to demand from increased numbers to the Friendship Club. Harborne Parish Lands charity subsidise the bingo and without their funding the bingo which is thoroughly enjoyed would not be able to take place.

Although Tuesday continues to be our busiest day, numbers for Thursdays session are increasing too.

However, Mecca needn’t worry – our prizes are slightly smaller, so pose no threat to them. Nevertheless, everyone has a good time.

Wednesday

Gently exercise

Suzie puts clients through a gentle exercise class for only £1. The club is also joined by the residents of nearby Karam Court.

This year (2010), we have provided twice monthly trips and/ or entertainment to benefit over 50 participants each time. For example, a trip to Weston-Super-Mare in August saw 80 people enjoy a day at the seaside – so much so, they were soon asking where they’ll be going next.

Harborne Parish Lands Charity is a big supporter of The Friendship Club, and has got behind the activities on offer. We are very grateful to them.

Every year we are concerned about funding and cuts, but, thankfully, each year sees us get by. Anne Parouty works very hard to continue to find funding for The Friendship Club, to maintain and expand the activities provided.

After the closure of St Marks Luncheon Club in September, we have gained 15 new members. We are glad to have new and enthusiastic members join our already trusty group of participants.
