BUDS

Notes from Jamie Crew: BUDS Manager

The BUDS Club (Better Understanding of Dementia in Sandwell) is well into its second year now at St. Albans, offering people experiencing dementia the opportunity to socialise, and to take part in a variety of creative activities.

BUDS members

The group has grown in numbers with an average of 20 people attending every week. We have been pleased to welcome more family carers of people with a dementia into the group, and also a growing number of volunteers.

Some people who attend the BUDS Club have also gone on to join in other St. Albans events during the rest of the week, and it is really positive to see people with a dementia still pursuing active lives in the community which is the way it should be. Other BUDS Services have also grown in numbers, with an additional 2 Clubs at the BUDS Centre in Smethwick, a befriending service in people’s own homes, and a support service for family carers of people with a dementia.

Sadly one of the first members of the BUDS Club, Sarah Sanders, passed away in November 2009 aged 99. Sarah was a wonderful lady with a kind and generous personality, and a great sense of humour - she is sadly missed. Thank you to Sarah’s daughter, Chris, and family for their continued support.

Thank you to Sheila, the BUDS Club Co-ordinator, for ensuring there are always a wide range of interesting and inventive activities every week, and to all our volunteers for their love and respect towards the club members. Also thanks to family carers for all their support, to the club members for sharing their lives with us every week, and to the staff at St. Albans for their continued belief in us once again this year.
